For the third year, Diane will be teaching at the Vilyuysk Pedagogical College. This
school has been the official teacher's college for the entire Sakha Republic since its founding in 1922. We are
very impressed with the director, faculty, and staff of this institution. The students here are a joy to teach,
and have a genuine desire to pursue the teaching vocation and return to their towns and villages throughout the
million-square mile republic.
Diane is teaching
Conversational English, a computer English course, and Typing. The method of "touch" or
"blind" typing is virtually unknown here. At the office, or typing one of my last-minute seminary
dissertations, Diane's normal typing speed is 93-100 words per minute. I used to enjoy watching her type. Now
I enjoy watching stunned Russian teenagers and faculty watching her type!
Many Siberians in our region are suffering greatly
from financial crises here. It is especially difficult for widows, the infirm, and working
families with young children, going without food from prolonged withholding of wages and a collapse of social
services. With a small group of dedicated loving Russian friends, we identify the destitute, buy staple foods at
the markets, and give directly to those in need as we have funds. A small, loving group of American Christians
provide the funding for this project. We are always praying for more
helpers who can apply
Matthew 25:35-40 and
James 2:15 here!

My good friend Valerian and I on the long 600 km "road" to Vilyuysk from Yakutsk with 1000 lbs.
of much needed medicines, food, and other supplies for those in greatest need in our region. These are
purchased in the city, and distributed in the name Christ thanks to the selfless generosity of many believers in the US.
At home, on the streets, in the stores, in our projects, our classrooms, and friendships;
our "work" is to reflect the love of Jesus Christ and seek to please Him. This can not be
done of our own strength, or ability. The Holy Spirit indwells and strengthens us to live above the frustrating
circumstances of life here in north-central Siberia. The Apostle Peter writes;
...if you should
suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are
blessed. And do not fear their intimidation, and do
not be troubled, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your
hearts, always being ready to make a defense to
everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope
that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in
which you are slandered, those who revile your good
behavior in Christ may be put to shame.
1 Peter 3:14-16 (NAS)
The above verses summarize our life and work here. The abiding presence, grace, and mercy of God keeps us
from the despair we see daily in those around us who have no present or future hope. The backbone of our
work are the faithful prayers of Christians who understand that our warfare, weapons, and enemies are
spiritual, and at stake are the eternal souls of men.
